Blog Prompt #2

Module 1 Blog Prompt #2  Task: Describe what communities you will join, your rationale for your selections, and how you think your involvement in these communities will support the design of your project. Please use the readings and guiding questions from the first two weeks of class to help inform your selection This Blog Prompt #2 is related to Step 1 of the MMP for additional information! (See below) STEP 1-Online communities are both collaborative and constructivist.  Educators may use online communities professionally to discuss issues they face in the classroom, to create partnerships, to share ideas, and to learn more about their subject area.  As community members, thoughts and ideas are shared not only through text-based discussion, but also through multimedia-oriented tools such as blogs, wikis, videos, podcasts, etc. Join an online educational community which you think will support and inform your project. Being a part of an online community is more than reading blogs, lurking in forums and watching videos.  You’ll want to be an active, contributing member of the community.  Jenkins (2006) calls this a “participatory culture.” He says, “A participatory culture is a culture with relatively low barriers to artistic expression and civic engagement, strong support for creating and sharing one’s creations, and some type of informal mentorship whereby what is known by the most experienced is passed along to novices.  A participatory culture is also one in which members believe their contributions matter, and feel some degree of social connection with one another” (p. 3). By being active in a participatory culture, you will learn about some of the issues which concern educators today, or which are impacting the educational community in general, and this will help you to obtain ideas, resources, and support as you look to develop your multimedia project. To complete this step of the project, you are required to do the following: 1)  Take the first two weeks of class and think about your project, who your audience might be, and what communities you might join. Visit some communities to learn more about them and to see if they might be able to help inform your project. For suggestions on communities that you might join, please feel free to check out the groups on Google+.  You’re encouraged to join one community OUTSIDE of Google+ as well (Twitter hashtags/conversations/people to follow, professional associations you may already belong to, Edutopia community groups, etc.).  Be sure to spend time each week visiting and contributing to your community, keeping in mind the purpose and goal of your project.  You must sign up for a minimum of two Google+ community groups in total.   Other Suggested Communities: Twitter Link Edutopia Link (Classroom 20) Describe what communities you will join, your rationale for your selections, and how you think your involvement in these communities will support the design of your project. Please use the readings and guiding questions from the first two weeks of class to help inform your selection

Blog Post Format & Tips

Purpose: A blog is an online personal journal or webpage that invites readers to participate. Teachers have adapted the blog to be used as an online communication and collaboration venue in the educational setting. This assignment is designed to allow you to familiarize yourself with blogging software and its applications while you also reflect on what you are learning in this course, discover ways to implement blogging within your own classroom practice, and have the opportunity to share your blogs in an authentic online community.

Objective: By the end of this project you will: (1) create and utilize a blog for reflecting on what you are learning in this course; (2) share ideas with other students in the online blog community created for this assignment; and (3) make explicit connections between what you are learning in this course and your own classroom practice.

Overview of Guidelines:

  •  Blog entry requirements are marked on the syllabus.
  • Be sure to follow the directions for each blog post to avoid point deductions.
  • Each time you post your blog, respond to 2 other blogs (diversify who you respond to so everyone is not responding to the same posts).
  • Illustrate your ideas and enhance your blog by adding links, images, video, multimedia, etc. After all, that's what this course is all about!

The following link is a sample blog I have created for you to examine. This can help you get started. There is no need for you to follow the format exactly; it is intended as a reference.
I recommend using Blogspot. You will need a GMAIL account.

Assignment Context: According to the Resource and Policy Guide in this week’s reading, “critical thinking empowers Americans to assess the credibility, accuracy and value of information, analyze and evaluate information, make reasoned decisions and take purposeful action” (p. 10). Critical literacy or more specifically, critical media literacy is comprised of five major principles (Kellner & Share, 2005):
1. All Media Messages are Constructions. Producers of media edit and tweak every component of their work, imbedding perspectives, interpretations, and messages within it.
2. Media Messages are Representations of Social Reality. Representations of social reality are based on the perceptions of those individuals who are constructing the text. Because of this, representations of people, groups, experiences or events tend to be less accurate, thus resulting in distortions and stereotypes.
3. Audiences as Well as Individuals Negotiate Meaning. Each individual interprets messages differently and draws different meaning from the same text.
4. Media Messages have Economic, Political, Social, and Aesthetic Purposes. Media texts are embedded with messages that are based on the producer’s particular ideology or political position. The primary aim for many works is to make money by influencing consumers’ lifestyles.
5. Each Media Text or Form of Communication has Unique Characteristics Relative to the Medium that Produces It. The manner in which a story is told and the medium used influences how we interpret the meanings embedded in the text. In this blog entry, select one of the commercials listed below.
Blog Post Entry Task #1-As you watch the commercial, reflect critically from the perspective of both a viewer/consumer and a creator/video producer. When responding to the video, touch upon each of the points below. Please make sure to indicate which advertisement/video you selected. 1) Analysis. What is the purpose of this video? What version of reality is it selling? 2) Audience. Who is the intended audience of this video? Through whose eyes or perspective is information conveyed? Why? 3) Representation. How are the people/figures in this video portrayed? Why do you believe they have been singled out? Whose voices are not being represented in this text? 4) Design. From the perspective of a video producer, discuss what you think are some of the most important design decisions used in creating this ad. Why do you think this specific medium was used to market this product?
