This technology tool kit is designed to provide language arts teachers with a quick list of technology resources that can be utilized within their language arts classes to make their reading and writing lessons more interactive. Below is a brief description of each technology tool.
1. Sub text- is an excellent free app that can be downloaded to your Ipad directly from the Apple Store. This app allows the user to visit web pages and it transforms the selected information into a book for the reader. Once students join a class group, the teacher can create assessments that appear in line with the relevant text (perfect for reading comprehension), sync notes, have discussions, link to relevant content on-line, share book reviews, and more. These features all work nicely for middle or high school language arts classes. Right now, the only books available are those available through Google Books http://www.freetech4teachers.com/2012/06/subtext-great-app-for-book-discussions.html
2. Bookmarklet-is a highly favorable ranked app. This app allows you to send web content to the app, much like Instapaper. The discussions, note-sharing, links, and assessment tools become available for that content.
3. Animoto-is a great app that allows the user to make professional looking videos. Language arts teachers can use this app to give students book previews or students can create movie projects after reading various novels. Animoto is an excellent digital tool that students can use to create and edit media. https://animoto.com/about
4.Wix-is an incredible website that allows the user to build web pages. For beginners, this website building tool is easy to use and helps the user step by step. You can build customized web pages at no cost to the user. No coding experience is needed. Also, if you have a Google account, you can simply log in with your Google account. To learn more click here: http://www.wix.com/ You can build personalized web pages specifically for your language arts students.
5. Boom Writer-is a great tool to get your class, student group, or club using technology to collaboratively write a real book. BoomWriter is totally free, and groups of five children or more can use it to read, write, compete and get published! http://boomwriter.com/
6. Protagonize-is a highly effective technology tool for the creative writing community who is dedicated to writing various forms of collaborative, interactive fiction. One author writes a story, and others post branches or chapters to it in different directions. For example, in language arts classrooms, teachers can have their students write collectively while the instructor reviews various writing elements.
7. Doceri-is an excellent digital app that allows teachers to creatively interact with projected content. This app has earned 5 stars in the apple store. "Combining screencasting, desktop control, and an interactive whiteboard in one app, you’ll never have to turn your back to the class or audience again. Create a lesson or presentation, insert images, save and edit your project and record a screencast video you can easily save or share. Doceri does it all!" https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/doceri-interactive-whiteboard/id412443803?mt=8
TEACHer's Technology Task Force Initiative
In thinking about my idea for a technology plan, I would like to implement a 6 step plan. Step 1-Assess the technology needs of the school
-Survey (either formal or formative) Step 2-Use the results of the survey to help identify the needs and what needs to be changed Step 3-Check the availability of technology resources Step 4-Break down the staff by content area (teacher leader will customize tech training to meet the needs of the participants) Step 4-Share PD resources on a shared network drive Step 5-Continued monitoring or assessment of how the tech is positively impacting student achievement.
Description:
As I work on developing and refining my technology plan, I think communication played a key role in helping me so far. See below:
The results of the survey will assist me as I work on developing Part II of my technology initiative.
Next, I used the results of the survey to help me refine my technology plan more specifically and the survey also played a key role in crafting our customized technology PD session. Verbally, the teachers discussed a need for content related resources (ie: PARCC), and as we move forward with unfolding my technology plan I fully believe in customizing to help to meet the needs of the teachers.
How can we understand and assess communication practices which utilize multiple modalities?
How can we effectively implement and evaluate our own multimedia projects?
The multiple forms of technology and the various capabilities of Web 2.0 tools has effectively allowed users to gain quick and reliable access to information. However, the reliability of the technology resource is solely dependent upon who's inputting the data and the source from which the information is being extracted from. Halverson (2010) states, "in an interactive process, the collective can make use of anybody's contribution and shape it in such a way that it fits the needs of the community. Through such collaborative processes the community can enhance its knowledge base and build new knowledge." In other words, the successful utilization of technology will allow its user to continuously gain new knowledge. This can be done collaboratively or not. However, I think the collaborative nature of how individuals use technology can also shape learning more positively. For example, I have witnessed this in my own classroom. My students collaborate using Google Docs to write their argumentative research essays. I think the collaborative form is more interesting as they write together, but I also think that the feedback that they give each other helps my students to improve in writing also. In today's time, the use multiple modalities is absolutely necessary and this type of interaction with technology can lead a synthesis of new capabilities or even new knowledge bases. Being able to try new tools and figuring out which tools work best and for very specific purposes also plays a pivotal role in shaping how products using technology can turn out.
One method that I used to rethink about my MMP project was reviewing the ADDIE model. Keeping in my the instructional design of my project, I reflected back upon reviewing what the ADDIE model included and how could I effectively incorporate elements from this model into my project. I reviewed the following:
"The ADDIE model is the generic process traditionally used by instructional designers and training developers. The five phases—Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation—represent a dynamic, flexible guideline for building effective training and performance support tools. While perhaps the most common design model, there are a number of weaknesses to the ADDIE model which have led to a number of spin-offs or variations."
Also, I used feedback from my colleagues to rethink how I could finalize and reshape my multimedia project. I care about what my users think in terms of accessibility, reliability, functionality.

For this MMP update I created several videos that demonstrates the function of the following apps: Doceri, I tunes University, and more. I think it's important to demonstrate to teachers how they can use the apps to enhance their lessons or creativity. Also, these videos can be found on my website. I have also included another update on my project as well. The first video provides an update of my project. In the second video, I provide a demonstration of how to use a Voki that I created. I also added a background of a picture of the building where we teach. In the 3rd video I created a screencast giving a demonstration how we can utilize the Doceri app to discuss student work.
Inspire: The Digital Tool for Language Arts Teachers
I created a website (still in the editing process) and here's a brief introduction with comments to the feedback that I received from teachers in my building and from the professor. Feel free to leave your comments. This screencast gives my comments in which I address the placement of elements in regard to the composition. I absolutely love color and I think one of the strengths is the visual hue of my page, which helps to add value. However, I fully believe in improvement and I'm looking to refine my product over the course of the next two weeks.
I have been working on a new and improved language arts resource. I started with a blank canvas. Please provide some feedback. This resource is being designed with the purpose of helping our language arts department become a little more organized. My supervisor asked for a tool that "had everything." The primary goal: To offer helpful information in regard to: the common core standard, the PARCC test, helpful iPad Apps, and reading strategies for non fiction texts. The website can be viewed at this address: http://kenchettadudley.wix.com/kenchettalaresource
This is an example of a screencast that I created, which will be utilized in a professional development meeting that I will be holding. The topic of the professional development session is to demonstrate effective instructional use of the iPad (content specific). So, within this screencast, I used Doceri, which is a recording app to help me create a screencast modeling to language arts teachers an example of how they can utilize this app in writing instruction. Prior to the professional development meeting, I issued a survey to help me be able to better identify what needs the teachers have. This survey can be accessed at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2QZGL7Z. The results of the survey indicated that the teachers are interested in learning about apps that can help in them improve LA instruction. (LA-language arts). So, I am in the process of collecting apps. Additionally, I would like to present apps and provide podcasts, screencasts to help teachers better understand the function of the apps all on one web based platform (My Multimedia Montage Project).
Over the past 7 weeks, I have learned so many new concepts pertaining to design, technology (hardware and software) and more importantly exposure to technology applications that have positively impacted my teaching performance. The feedback that I have been given from my colleagues in this class has been a powerful way to help me gain clarity about the many uses of technology and design. So far, I have gained new experience in video editing, working with various concepts, compositions, and I have learned about uploading and editing within the You Tube platform. I worked with iMovie and because of my experience in this course, I have been able to teach students how to take academic content and "digitize" it. When I first started this class, I must admit I was really frustrated, but then I realized that since everything is hands on I would need to be patient and self direct my own learning. However, recognizing that my technology experience was limited, I knew gaining the exposure and experience within this class would be critical to growth in my professional career.
To address some of the comments that I received on the MMP, I said, ".Rationale
& Summary of Project:
The topic of my project focuses
on the enhancement of Language Arts instruction by embedding the ipad (and
applications) into the Language Arts classroom to improve student
performance in Writing/Literacy.] More specifically, I have identified
through verbal communication/SAL meetings that there is a high need within our
department to create more effective lessons that are aligned with the common
core standards and also incorporates the Ipad and its applications.
Answer: Yes, I am creating a website that will be used as a literacy resource to show various ways the iPad can be infused in language arts literacy.
I will
use the specific elements that I have learned within this course to help me
create an aesthetically pleasing interactive website using the principles of
graphic design. I will also integrate various technological tools that I have
learned within in the course. Implementation-I will add content specific information for the teachers to
utilize in their own classrooms. I would like to expand the implementation
section area of my multimedia project and allow teachers to share resources
such as lessons with other teachers within our building and sub community. I
will evaluate the effectiveness of the professional development training
sessions by using a questionnaire. I still need to work on figuring out
how to assess the effectiveness of the program formatively.
Answer: This will be a multi session iPad Training workshop. It will be introduced by me in person and the teachers will have access to the literacy resource that I will create.
Answer: I was able to make my first screencast on the computer, but I will explore and see if screen casting works on the iPad. If not, I will create a screen cast and I still would like to demo this for our teachers in the language arts department. Or, i will create a video and upload my own screen casting you tube video onto my webpage. In that sense, it would teach teachers how to create screen casts and how explain how they can be used in the language arts classroom.
After reviewing Mayer's Principles for the design of Multimedia Learning: I would like to discuss the following 3 principles:
Principles based on social cues
Personalization principle: People learn better when the words are in conversational style rather than formal style.
Voice principle: People learn better when words are spoken in a standard-accented human voice than in a machine voice or foreign-accented human voice.
Image principle: People do not necessarily learn better from a multimedia lesson when the speaker’s image is added to the screen.
The personalization principle suggests that individuals have the ability to learn more from dialogue based conversations rather than formal style. I think this is definitely true and as I plan to create my website, I will utilize conversational style words to attract the attention of my audience. The voice principle suggests that people learn better from natural voices versus computerized voices. In that sense, I can use my own voice to layer with sound with in any still or moving image. Lastly, I think the image principle is really interesting because it suggests that the designer's selected image is the single most important aspect of the design. People can learn from the chosen image or the viewer can be terribly distracted. Either way, image selection plays a pivotal role in the completeness of the presentation or of the design.
Here's another video that I created. I think I'm addicted! This is so much fun. I'm looking forward to creating professional looking videos, so, for now I'm just getting my feet wet. Feel free to leave comments and suggestions. I would greatly appreciate it!.
This video was created using an application called Perfect Video.
I edited my last video and included various fonts and special effects. I added a thumbnail as well. I think I experienced the most difficulty with trimming my video, however, since it was my first time with trimming I definitely look forward to creating and editing more videos. I even purchased a video editing program called, Wondershare. It helped me transform my original video and I even prefer this program over the iMovie application. But I love the idea of video editing and the power of editing videos specific to one's content area can enhance learning even if your an educator of children or adults.
For this Mini Art School assignment I decided to utilize my i pad and I recorded a video of my students working with an interactive tool called, Cacoo. It was the first time that my students were utilizing the interactive graphic organizer, and they learned how to create and share their interactive maps while collaborating in regard to their argumentative research essay topics. This video depicts the pre planning phase of argumentative writing in which the students are required to collaborate, plan, and explore ideas. After recording the video I uploaded it to iMovie then I added a layering of sound (my own voice). In other words, I removed the actual audio and I added new audio utilizing the record button in iMovie. I also added text to the video. Once I uploaded the video to You tube, I added a photo to the video. I really enjoyed this activity and I'm looking forward to editing more videos using various technology apps.
Within this exercise, I decided to select an image and I applied color echo's to intensify the concept. I learned about masking and I developed a different color scheme to compliment the image. The first image is the recreated image to increase the visual flow. I experimented with variations to color. This was my first time using an editing soft ware called Font Candy & Pics Art. I prefer Pics Art. I added a boarder variation as well.
Boarder Variation Activity page 197
The first image is the original Carvel Character. I took a screen shot with my I-pad and edited the the image adding a boarder of the 3 images below. I think the edge treatment magnifies the image to reinforce the overall composition.
Background/Rationale:
Last school year, the teachers in my building were given a new technology tool,
an I pad. We were told to utilize the I-pad in your own classroom to enhance
your instructional practice. Only 10 teachers were selected to attend formal
training on how to effectively utilize an I-pad. Then, only the selected group
of teachers who were chosen to attend the Apple Vanguard training were
instructed to turnkey the information and knowledge to other faculty members in
the building. However, the faculty
members were not grouped or assigned by content area (this was a challenge). We
were instructed to inform the faculty members how to operate the hardware and
soft ware components of the I-pad. Some teachers were confident while others
were not. Therefore, this prompted me to begin to think about designing a
professional development training (content specific) for teachers to learn how
to enhance the quality of their instructional practice by utilizing the I-pad. Specifically,
in the area of language arts literacy I became intrigued and constantly inquired
about ways of improving language arts instruction by infusing the I-pad that
was given to me without content area specific training on how to utilize the
new technology tool.
1.Goals:
The purpose of this Multimedia Montage Project is:
·To design a domain specific professional
development training session that allows teachers to collaboratively build interactive
technology lessons.
·To create a technology resource for
teachers to utilize in the area of language arts
·To demonstrate to LA teachers how various
new technology tools(applications on the I pad) can help to improve teacher instruction
2.Rationale & Summary of Project:
The topic of my project
focuses on the enhancement of Language Arts instruction by embedding the ipad
(and applications) into the Language Arts classroom to improve student performance in
Writing/Literacy. I am interested in creating a digital tool or technological
web based resource that allows teachers to utilize the resource to scaffold and
support their instructional practice in the area of language arts literacy. More specifically, I have identified through
verbal communication/SAL meetings that there is a high need within our
department to create more effective lessons that are aligned with the common
core standards and also incorporates the Ipad and its applications.
3.Audience:
The audience will
consist of 12 language arts teachers. Some are more experienced with embedding
the I-pad and its applications while others are not. Some have limited
experience while others are more apt to learning how to navigate the tool and
its applications. There is a wide range of teacher starting points. This will
need to be taken into consideration not only as I plan and develop the
technology resource tool but also as when I offer the professional development
training session.
4.Overview of your instructional plan
and Your Learning Objectives:
For the purpose of this
professional development training session I will utilize a tool that I will
design for my Web-Based Multimedia class to deliver instruction to the teachers
within my content area. First, I will informally interview all teachers to
collect data that measures their level of technology knowledge (i-pad wise). I will
ask questions such as: What technology applications have you tested out so far
this school year in your language arts class? What technology applications do
you find to be the most useful for supplementing reading and/or writing
lessons? How has the technology incorporation improved student achievement?
Have you documented student success because of the technology?
5.Technology
Tools/ & Rationale:
For this project I will design a
technology resource (website) that offers language arts educators various
interactive tools (multimodal) that will allow them to have access to new
applications (from the App Store) and also instructions on how to effectively
enhance their lessons by utilizing the LA tool. I would like to offer instruct
teachers on how to create their own technology resource so that they can meet
the specific needs of their students. For example, screen casting is definitely
an effective tool that I would like for the LA teachers in my building to utilize.
In addition to the ADDIE model
(to help me design my technology tool), I will also utilize the SAMR model and
video (watch below) to help me fully explain to teachers that the manner in
which they embed the technology (I am also referring to apps) directly relates
to the acquisition of specific skills and knowledge by students. This model will allow teachers to become aware
(novice technology users) or remain cognizant (it’s user friendly) in regard to
the vast levels of how technology can be utilized, understood, and enacted.
6.Learning
Theories and Principles:
As
I thought about the construction of my multimedia project, I also contemplated
what theories would govern my project. I will utilize The Addie Model to help
me design my project. This model is broken down into 5 parts: 1. Analysis 2. Design
3. Development 4. Implementation 5. Evaluation. In the analysis phase, I will discuss at the training session the
instructional problem that has been identified. I will also clarify any
misunderstandings to ensure that each participant is clear about the
expectations and learning goals.Also, I
will describe the various starting points. Maybe I will embed a poll everywhere
app to interactively poll the audience. Next, I will present the learning goals
in the analysis phase , and I will utilize a self created tool to help me in
the process of organizing how I would like to present information.During the developmental phase, I will
develop and create content specific mini lessons (similar to our mini art
school lessons) and these lessons will be designed to help teachers learn about
effectively utilizing the I pad to improve instruction in the area of language
arts literacy. I will use the specific elements that I have learned within this
course to help me create an aesthetically pleasing interactive website using
the principles of graphic design. I will also integrate various technological
tools that I have learned within in the course (i.e., screen casts, podcast,
and other tools that I plan to explore over the course of the next month).
still need to work on figuring out how to assess the effectiveness of the
program formatively.
Additionally, since I
am a firm believer in Bloom’s Taxonomy, and as I was conducting some
preliminary research for this project, the community that I joined on Linkedin posted
information about Bloom’s Taxonomy in the Digital Age. This caught my attention
and I wanted to see how I could apply the Bloom’s Taxonomy Framework to my
project. I found a very resourceful layout of Bloom’s Taxonomy in the Digital
Age. I love the graphic representation of the framework also because it
provides examples of Web 2.0 tools for individuals to look up and gather more
information ab out.Please see below.
The projected date of the
completion of this project will be approximately towards the end of November so
that I can have enough time to receive peer feedback. I will implement the
training session in my building in the first two weeks of December ( the specific
date is yet to be determined) after I receive the feedback and complete the
final project in December. I plan to have everything completed by December 14,
2014.
